The City of Newark is located in Silicon Valley on the southeast edge of the San Francisco Bay. Incorporated in 1955 and currently comprising approximately 13 square miles, Newark is in one of the most dynamic urban areas in the world, and has maintained a strong and proud spirit rooted in community values. The City is seeking an experienced manager with excellent communication skills for their new Assistant Fire Chief. The ideal candidate will be approachable, a good listener, and maintain an open door policy for all staff. The new Assistant Chief will be able to engender respect, trust and support from the Department staff by being a firm yet fair manager. Candidates who will be able to work collaboratively with the Fire Chief in order to carry out the mission and goals of the Department are highly desired. The Assistant Chief serves as the Acting Chief in the Chiefs absence. As such, the ideal candidate will possess excellent interpersonal skills. The City is seeking candidates with labor management experience who will work to maintain the positive relationship between management and the Firefighters Union. The new Assistant Chief will be committed to actively participating with the Newark community by being both visible and approachable. Candidates must possess seven years of progressively responsible experience, including one year in a supervisory position equivalent to Fire Battalion Chief or higher in a fire agency. A Bachelors Degree in fire science, public administration, business administration, or a related field is required. A Masters Degree is desirable. The total compensation for the Assistant Fire Chief is $109,992-$159,468. This is a fully compensated salary; from which employees may elect to purchase a full array of standard benefits at group rates.
