Molly Matthews Scholarship Fund
Applicant Information

The Molly Matthews Scholarship Fund of Women in the Fire Service, Inc., was established in the memory of a Seattle firefighter who died in the line of duty in 1984. The Molly Matthews Fund provides financial assistance to women in the fire and rescue service who wish to attend WFS conferences to improve their skills and knowledge, and to enhance their functioning within their individual fire service organizations.

Two scholarships will be awarded for each International Conference of Fire Service Women, and for each Fire Service Women's Leadership Training seminar. The scholarships will cover the registration costs for the conference (not travel, lodging, or meals). Applications for scholarships for the March 2002 Leadership Training Seminar in San Diego, California, must be postmarked no later than January 15, 2002. Applications will not be accepted by fax or e-mail.

A Selection Committee, consisting of three WFS members and one member of the Board of Trustees, will review the applications and recommend award recipients to the Board for approval. Award recipients will be notified by February 5 of their selection.

The Selection Committee will consider the following criteria in order to select award recipients: history of fire service involvement, history (personal or family) of involvement in WFS activities, fire and rescue service career (or volunteer service) plans and prospects, and history of involvement in women's issues in other areas.

All applicants will be individually notified of the outcome of the selection process.

To apply:

Submit four copies of each of the following to WFS at the address below:

?-- Completed application form (available from WFS)
??-- Copy of applicant's resum? or curriculum vitae
?-- Signed statement explaining how attending the conference fits into the candidate's plans for a future in the fire and rescue service.
?-- Signed statement of economic need: how will the Molly Matthews Fund award make a difference in the candidate's ability to attend the conference?

In general, we urge applicants to submit a clear and concise application: in other words, more is not necessarily better. We want to know who you are, what your career goals are, and how a WFS conference scholarship willl help you achieve them. Excessive paperwork will only slow down the review process, and will not necessarily help your application.

Mail applications to:

Applications for year 2001 funds must be postmarked no later than January 15, 2002. Faxed or e-mailed applications, incomplete applications, and applications sent after this deadline, will not be accepted.
