This senior management level department head manages a combined and integrated Fire and Rescue Service with over 900 career fire fighter-rescuers and over 500 certified volunteer fire fighter-rescuers. The annual operating budget is $136 million in addition to a $43 million six-year capital improvement program.

The Fire Chief has full authority over all fire, rescue, and emergency medical services in the County, including services provided by local volunteer fire and rescue departments. The Chief is responsible for coordinating and directing a variety of programs that emphasize community-oriented service delivery through partnerships, problem solving, and prevention. The Chief is appointed by the County Executive and confirmed by the County Council.
