I am off on another mission, ladies. I have a paper for my final English class that requires a research topic. Of course I had to pick this one, since it seems to be the bane of my existence.
I would appreciate any input you could provide on successes, failures, issues and similar problems dealing with retention and recruitment problems due to department politics.
I know it's a difficult subject, especially for thos of us that have been burned by it. If you could cut and paste and then answer the following questions, I would appreciate it greatly...
Jenn

1. Has your department lost personnel or had a marked decrease in participation due to departmental politics?

2. What type of department are you in? Volunteer, Combination or Paid?

3. Are you an officer or have you ever been one in your current establishment?

4. What effects, if any, have you and your department suffered due to department politics?

5. Are there one or more cliques in your department, one of which seeming to control the major management decisions of the department?

6. What factors have you seen that contribute to dissension in your department?

Additional Comments?

As an example, I will answer these quastions according to my position.

1. Yes, it has nearly torn our department apart. Call response is at an all time low. Job performance is right there at the bottom of the bucket.
2. Combination.
3. I was a lieutenant for two years, I am not currently an officer.
4. Loss of rank, position, professional reputation and confidence in my superiors.
5. Yes and YES. Our department is run by a woman that sits on the chief's lap and tells him who to listen to and what to do. She is the only female (and a friend of hers) that seem to get promoted now. She has not done her job in five years but gets every promotion that comes up.
6. Effort and accomplishment are no longer recognized or valued. It seems the ones that exert the least effort are hired and promoted, as long as the maintain a good 'working' relationship with the chief. Disrespect to female officers is encouraged and any authority they had is now strongly limited. Only those in the 'clique' are supported. This kind of leadership will be the downfall of our department. Mismanagement isn't even the right word, slaughter is closer to the mark. Politics.

I'm not currently a member of a department, thanks to department politics. I can comment on a department where I was a volunteer, and another where I was paid. Is my input welcome?

My response is on its way. I'd also like to see the paper when it's done, if that's ok.
