I had a personal matter happen that needed to be discussed with my captain. My captain then turned around and within a few hours all of my peers and some of the public knew about this. Im a so embarrassed I didn't know if I could show my face at work. However I sucked it up and went but it was hard. What should I do? embarrassed in Nebraska

Telephone, telefax, telefirefighter. That was first thing said to me when I started fire school six years ago. And it TRUE. There is no such thing as privacy or secrets on the job. But your Cpt. should be more professional than that. If it is as bad as you say I would discuss it with him so that there is no repetition.

I haven't heard that one before, and it's great. So very true! I always say the fire department is worse than a sewing circle for gossiping. That's why I wouldn't date any firefighter in my county! Maybe even my state...

girlmedic, sorry for your embarassment. I agree with Bombera that you might be well served by telling your Captain how it upset you that he spread your personal matter around the station - that is if he did it out of thoughtlessness. If he did it out of meanness, talking to him about it might not help at all.

The story usually gets jucier/more screwed up as it is passed a long too. Sorry a supervisor did that to you. It's one thing for firefighters to gossip, but part of wearing the bars includes knowing when to keep information private. That's a shame. Hope you get through it and can continue enjoying what you do.
