Sorry. I decided there's too much personal info here.

I personally think you should drop it. You went away for the summer, and while you were away the officers decided that this other person could take over your duties. I see absolutely no reason why you would use the word "insubordination" in your post, since you clearly state that this person outranks you AND had approval from the officers.

"Betrayal"? "Insubordination"? "Unethical"? I bet in everyone else's view this other person was providing a service to the fire department while you were on holiday. If you make a stink about this one, I don't see how you can come across looking like anything but a PITA.

(IMO)

Plain and simple-
Do not let them get away with this. Otherwise they will do this to someone else.
Do not tolerate disrespectful behavior.

From everything that you have said, I just don't really see any problem. You haven't actually said that he has messed up the project, just that he has done things his way. You were away all summer and you said that no one contacted you. Were you actually working on this project while you were away during the summer, or were you putting it on hold until you returned? If you returned and found a lot of stuff done and were given the opportunity to pick up the project at this point, can't you consider that he did you a favor by getting things moving (or keeping them rolling) while you were away? And if you really have a lot more of your own work to do and he has the free time, why not just let him do it and take care of your own stuff?

If your initial feeling was to just let it go, for gods sake don't get all worked up because "everyone" (and something tells me it's not really everyone) thinks you should get your undies in a bunch. There are too many really legitimate things to get pissed off at in life, we don't have to go around creating them.

This is a volunteer department you're with, right? Me, too. Just be glad that stuff is getting done at all, instead of getting your ego all mixed up in WHO is doing it.

My bottom line... if something really makes me mad, then I'll be mad about it. If it doesn't really make me mad, I see no reason to stir myself up into being mad just to make some point and demand respect. That's being reactionary and having a chip on your shoulder, and serves no purpose.
