I am currently a 240 Firefighter-Paramedic currently working part-time @ a Full-time dept trying to get experience. I also am currently on several civil service lists. My part-time jobs I have been told by higher management that they have met their quota of females. I have been told my fat ass wouldn't make it through holes and that I am taking a man's job, soley because my husband already has a Police, Civil service job. Sleeping quarters are also an issue. Overtime is being given solely given when I work because the Chief stated the men aren't comfortable with me working. On one civil service list I am the only female to ever pass the municipal civil service physical agility and I was told by high management positions that I would be one of the 1st to be hired and I never got an interview. 3 men were hired. I can't help but believe, since I can do the job, that my sex is being used to discriminate against me. I am fairly new at this and I am looking for helpful guidance as to how I should handle this situation. I feel like I am being backed into a corner and that no matter how well I perform, I am never going to be good enough because I am a female.
Any Suggestions?

My first step would be to approach the Human Services office with your concerns, if you do not feel comfortable with going through your chain of command, which sounds scary, by the way. If your state has Equal Employment laws you should then go to them. You can check that by going to the state employment website. If your state does not protect you, the Equal Employment Opportunities Commission (EEOC) is supposed to. Every state has at least one EEOC office and is also on the web.
By the way, what state are you in? Here in NC, 240 is on the light side for medics
Also be aware that they will bring forth your personnel records and anything they think they can use against you, yes they may even make stuff up.
Good luck
Jenn
