Heather Burford was sworn in May 8 as chief of the Ridgefield, Connecticut, Fire Department, becoming the first woman ever to lead a career or combination fire department in the state. The Ridgefield Fire Department has 29 career and 35 volunteer firefighters.
Burford has been in the fire service since 1989, starting as a volunteer firefighter in the town of Wilton. She was hired by the Manchester Fire Department in 1993, becoming a paramedic and promoting to lieutenant before becoming a battalion chief six years ago.
