?...Women in the Fire Service organized the first-ever conference of fire service women, held in Boulder, Colorado, in 1985. More than 175 women attended.
. Most of the women who are chiefs of career-level fire departments in the U.S. are WFS members, and many have been so for most of their career. Most regularly serve as faculty members at WFS conferences, taking their time to mentor the next generation of fire service leaders.
... The Women Chief Fire Officers' organization (WCFO) met in conjunction with the WFS conference in Georgia. If you're a female fire officer on your way up, you should check out this group as well.
... Cobb County Fire & Emergency Services is the largest fire department anywhere to be headed by a woman. Rebecca Denlinger, a 24-year fire service veteran, is chief of the 600-member department, gave her strong and active support to the 2001 conference, guaranteeing its success.
... Our international conferences include not only dozens of educational workshops and seminars, but also fun social events such as our famous (infamous?) fundraising auction of firefighting paraphernalia, a "Buff's Night" swap meet, plenty of time for informal networking, and tours of local fire departments and historical/cultural attractions.
... WFS has scholarship and work-study programs available to assist women who could otherwise not afford to attend our conferences and seminars. Ask us for details if you're interested.
